Stephen Ministry - Caring for people through people
Core Purpose of Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministry's core purpose is summed up in the words of Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians.
"To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12-13)
What we do
Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and challenges both in our congregation and community as we are entreated by Apostle Paul:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God (2Cor 1:3-4)
Stephen Ministers work together with pastors to reach more people with Christian care and the love of Christ than pastors can by themselves. The identity of care-receivers and discussions in each caring relationship remains private and confidential. Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training on emotional and spiritual care and they meet with their care-receivers faithfully on regular basis for as long as there is a need.
Ways to Support Disciples' Stephen Ministry
Pray for all Stephen Ministry leaders, ministers and care-receiver.
Inform Stephen Ministry leaders about those who might benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister (you must first seek the permission of the individual before contacting the leaders or congregational care).
Inform the church members and others community members about the availability of Stephen Ministry at DUMC and the care it can provide.
Be willing to receive Stephen Ministry support when you are in need of Christian care.
